5 Best Practices That Will Keep Your Invisalign Aligners Clean and Clear

August 29, 2024

Patient using toothbrush to clean aligner

Like millions of patients around the world, you may have been drawn to Invisalign because the aligners are completely clear, making them virtually undetectable. If that’s the case, then you need to take good care of them throughout your teeth-straightening journey (not just at the beginning!) so they don’t start to stain or smell. With this in mind, keep reading for five easy ways you can take care of your Invisalign aligners.

1. Put Your Aligners in Their Case, Not a Napkin

In order to stay on-track with your treatment plan, you need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day. When it does come time to take them out – whether it’s to eat your breakfast or brush your teeth after dinner – you need to place them in their designated case. That way, your aligners don’t become a breeding ground for bacteria.

2. Rinse Your Aligners with Clean, Cool Water

Another important “to-do” when removing your aligners is rinsing them in clean water. This ensures that saliva, food particles, and the like are removed from the surface before you place them in their designated case. Just make sure to check the temperature of the water first because, if it’s too hot, your aligners may warp!

3. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush to Clean Your Aligners

If you put your aligners back on without brushing your teeth, then the food particles will be trapped in place, which increases your risk of tooth decay. So, make sure that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub each surface beforehand. Although toothpaste is not recommended, you can use a clear, mild dishwashing liquid to give them a deeper clean.

4. Soak Your Aligners Daily

While you’re eating dinner or completing your oral hygiene regimen, allow your aligners to soak in a dentist-recommended cleaner. This helps remove plaque, saliva, and the like from the nooks and crannies. Plus, it helps prevent surface stains or an odor from developing!

5. Don’t Put Your Aligners in Mouthwash

If you don’t have a cleaner specifically for clear aligners, you might be tempted to use what you do have, like mouthwash. However, this is often too harsh, resulting in more harm than good. It’s also important not to use bleach, regular toothpaste, or any other products you have at home without consulting your dentist.
