Sometimes, the replacements need replacing.
Dentures are a good solution after the loss of teeth, but unfortunately, they aren’t a lifetime stand-in. Even though they’re built to be strong and durable, over time, they wear out from daily chewing and speaking. They can become uncomfortable or even harmful to your oral health. But how do you know when it’s time for a replacement? In this post, you’ll learn how to spot the signs that it may be time for an upgrade and what to do when that time comes.
Sign #1: Your Dentures Move Around
You may have noticed lately that your dentures are slipping and sliding around or possibly even falling out. Sadly, over time, dentures lose the natural grip that binds them to your gums. Oral functions like eating and speaking create normal wear and tear on them. After tooth loss, your jawbone continually changes shape over the years, creating the need for an adjustment or a new device. The jawbone will atrophy whether you’ve naturally lost a tooth or it was removed.
If you’ve observed that the fit isn’t as snug anymore and that your dentures are moving around, this is a tell-tale indicator that it may be time to replace them.
Sign # 2: Your Dentures are Causing Discomfort
If your dentures are relatively new and in good shape, you probably haven’t noted any pain while using them. But if you’ve felt pain lately when chewing or biting into something, this could be a signal that your prosthesis is ill-fitting.
Likewise, if you have sore or irritated gums, it could be a result of your dentures rubbing against them, another sign of a bad fit.
Sign #3: You’re Having Trouble Speaking Clearly
Maybe you’ve been slurring your words lately and your enunciation isn’t as clear. It could be a loose-fitting device moving around that’s not allowing your tongue and mouth to function regularly and form words as you normally would.
On the other hand, if your dentures are too tight or not properly aligned, it can also impact how the parts of your mouth create sounds.
Sign #4: Your Dentures Are Damaged or Discolored
Chips and cracks in your dentures are never great, and they’re a good indicator that you’ve had your current dentures long enough.
Though they’re covered with a sealant that acts as a shield against stains, discoloration of your false teeth can occur, particularly if you smoke or drink a lot of coffee, wine, or other dark liquids. Nobody wants stained teeth, and stains mean you’ve had your dentures a long time!
How Do I Replace My Dentures?
If it’s time for a replacement, your dentist can outfit you with a new set. They’ll customize your prosthesis for a secure fit and can also shade them to match the color of your surrounding teeth (if applicable).
You may want to consider implant dentures if you want a long-term solution. Implant dentures are attached to and anchored by posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone and slowly fuse over time with the tissue. This treatment provides a very secure, stable fit, ensuring no disruptions to your everyday life.
If you recognize any of these signs, it may be time to see about an upgrade to your current dentures. Schedule an appointment with your dentist today today to discuss your options!
