Why Do My Dentures Smell?

They can last for many years with the correct care, but they may begin to smell in a few months if you aren’t careful. Although dentures look smooth, they have small pores that can trap bacteria, leading to an unpleasant odor and damaging your prosthetic over time. Thankfully, it’s easy to keep your dentures odor-free. Here’s how to prevent your dentures from smelling and ensure they last for 5-7 years before needing to be replaced.

Bacteria Cause Unpleasant Odors

Smelly dentures are a sign that you’re not cleaning them well. Your mouth is home to hundreds of species of bacteria. Many are necessary for a healthy smile, but others are harmful to your oral health and dentures. Not to mention, your dentures are exposed to bacteria when eating and drinking.

Bacteria can hide in the pores of your dentures. An overgrowth of oral bacteria will cause unpleasant odors. Over time, bacteria can weaken your prosthetic, causing you to need replacements sooner. Your overall wellness can also suffer the consequences of dirty dentures, increasing your risk of infections and other issues.

How to Keep Your Dentures Clean

You can invest in a healthy mouth and body by keeping your dentures clean. Here’s how to combat bacteria to keep your dentures looking and smelling their best:

  • Rinse After Eating: The residue from the foods and drinks you consume can lead to odors and stains. It’s best to rinse your dentures with warm water after eating and drinking.
  • Brush Daily: Dentures can’t get cavities, but you should still brush them at least once a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid to clean them. Don’t use any abrasive products, like toothpaste, because they can scratch your dentures. Bacteria are difficult to remove from the scratches, making your dentures look discolored and causing unwanted odors.
  • Use a Soaking Solution: Although brushing is effective, your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere, like the pores of your dentures. Place your dentures in an overnight soaking solution, which kills 99.9% of bacteria. It will also give your mouth a break to keep your smile healthy.
  • Clean Your Mouth: In addition to cleaning your dentures, don’t forget about your mouth. Gently brush your gums, cheeks, and tongue at least twice per day.
